The return of fighting games?
#1
This year marks the first in a VERY long time that fighting games have been thrust back towards the forefront of gaming. I got into gaming a little bit too late for the golden age of fighting games but this year there are 3 fighting games hitting the market that I would like to play and another that mildly intrigues me. Soul Caliber is probably the best 3d fighting franchise out there (not an expert though) as well as TWO street fighter games. Super Street Fighter II HD Remix is an awesome remakes of one of the greatest 16 bit games to hit the market. And Street Fighter 4 seems like all the greatness of the classic streetfighters AND a bag of chips (and maybe a soda too). Then MK vs DC is a game that while not interesting me from a purchasing perspective definately makes me want to see all the new info that releases about it.

Are we seeing the resurgance of the fighting game? Is this going to be a one year deal followed by another multi-year drought? Or am I the only one around hear intrigued by all this?

(And yet another lengthy post that doesn't really say anything brought to you by me. Your welcome.:roxSmile

Beat'em ups don't seem to be as popular as the coin-op generation has been weaned off the quick fix gameplay style and the younger generation never had the arcade fixation in the first place. If those you listed above sell well then we may see a new surge of releases but I think the mid-late nineties popularity has gone for good.

I think that all of these will sell enough to justify more games in the series but I sure as hell don't want to see MK, SF, and SC hitting in the same year everytime. I hope that in the future the release dates get spread out over two or three years.

Your comments on arcades are 100% accurate. I'm 17. Arcades in my time are essentially casinos for kids. You gamble a certain amount of money in hopes of earning tickets that earn you completely over valued dumb prizes. Today I can see the idiocy in that. But 7 years ago I couldn't. The funniest thing about current arcades is that "real" games are largely ignored in preference of the "try to land the token in a dump truck 'games'". The reason for this is simple. Kids (and even adults) don't care to play the "real" games because they can play better ones at home.

Back in the day, if you wanted to play the latest game it was in the arcades long before it hit the home. Now it's all about home gaming.

Mortal Kombat has been floundering around for years trying to find a new niche now the whole fatalities and digitised characters novelty has worn off or is no longer present. They've tried weapon combat, multiple fighting styles, 3D movement and the like and nothing has kept them properly in the public eye. It's nice to see them getting lots of attention again with this D.C. crossover because I used to enjoy the games back in the 2D days, crazy story and all.

Street Fighter is really the only one that hasn't been around properly for a while, and it would definitely be interesting to see how each game fares if Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat and (slightly later) Tekken are all getting lots of attention again.

I don't think Street Fighter will be anything special, call me crazy but Capcom is on a very slippery slope to become EA Japan at this point.

Resurgence? Maybe. If you saw a new Killer Instinct game or a Bloody Roar game or a Samurai Showdown things might be trending upward. Either way, all the usual suspects are still around, and SF II HD Remix just seems like them milking SF II some more. I played SF II when I was about 6 years old, lol. 13 years ago, and they're still making SF II games, that's ridiculous.

Fighting games were great at the arcade because you could fight some guy you don't know, but at home it just doesn't feel the same. Online arcade multiplayer always has that latency that makes all the difference.

I don't agree with there being a resurgence, just a lot of the usual suspects making games at around the same time. If they sell well, maybe in 2 or 3 years you'll see something interesting.

In terms of how the press are perceiving them though the genre is getting more attention than it has for a while. Nobody has given a crap about the MK roster in years whereas now it's getting a lot of attention, even if it is along the lines of "DC character, DC character and two MK characters added to the roster". One mag (GamesTM?) is apparently going out this month with separate covers for most of the SFIV characters, with lots of attention generally being focused on both II and IV.

I think that's mostly what Shadow means when talking about a resurgence. People are interested in them in a way that doesn't seem to have been the case since the 16-bit era, essentially since 3D shook everything up and left only games that began in 3D (such as Tekken and the Soul games) standing strong.

Maybe, maybe not. I think the fighting genre is incredibly wide open. I don't feel like there's been a significant evolution in gameplay, maybe someone can go out there and do something totally new?

Well, I downloaded Tekken 5 Online before I left on vacation and played it rather obsessively at times. I also got Soul Calibur IV, and while I an easily frustrated with the ARCADE MODE which seems impossible, the ability to create my own characters in a sense and NORMAL story mode have provided some fun. The first fighting games I've played and enjoyed since DOA on the PS2. Mmmm... Which reminds me I need to find DOA for the 360.

If that says anything about fighting games making a come back, I dunno, but I certainly enjoy them again for the first time in a long time.
9/2/2010 - Leaving PSXE. The site imo has become a breeding ground for fanboys and extemists. I can get my PS3 news anywhere, and PSXE does not breed a community that is exactly welcoming.

Some of you shall be missed though! I think you few know who you are Smile
A few of you are actually on my PSN list at that! Cool

Resurgance? I don't really think so. I think that its just that we've had a drought of quality fighting games for a while now. And now the big franchises are coming back. I remember playing tekken:tag-5 all the time with my family and it was always a blast. And when a new fighting game comes out i would know about it before hand. But when it comes to fighting games and the media, then I would say that their is a resurgance on that front.
