  Are videogames sexist?
Posted by: Spartan119 - 03-10-2015, 07:33 PM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

In an attempt to jumpstart some discussion on here again, I thought I'd pose this question since it seems to be the topic on everyone's minds lately. A recent front page article, or more accurate the comments on it (nothing about Ben's actual article is either controversial or problematic, it's actually entirely neutral), is what prompted this thread:

Do you think gaming is being "hijacked" be "feminists and social justice warriors", or do you think there is a legitimate problem in games that needs to be addressed?

Personally, I think there is a big problem with sexism in gaming, and I think EVERYONE would be better served it it were properly addressed. The sooner we stop objectifying women in games, the sooner we can start being more inclusive of actual female characterization in them, which can only lead to richer, deeper stories, since they happen to comprise half the world population and as such have quite a few stories with their own unique perspectives.

  Ubi's Monopoly scam.
Posted by: frostface - 12-17-2014, 09:17 PM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

Monopoly is available on the PS4 and it's awesome. I have to get that out of the way early because there's a bit of a public service warning and rant coming on.

A couple of weeks ago I seen on the PSN store the family fun pack of Monopoly. Included in the pack was Monopoly Plus, My Monopoly and a Monopoly card game. Each can be bought separately but at the time of purchase only the packaged family pack was available, I guess the store was still updating. I spent 30euro for stuff I didn't really need as the basic game was all I really cared about. However I ended up with all the packs in one convenient bundle and went off recommending it to anyone and everyone.

A couple of people took me up on the recommendation and bought the basic Monopoly Plus game without all the extra fluff I'd purchased. We went to get a game in and when we'd invite each other, me with the family pack that includes the same game they own, we'd get directed to the PS store to buy the game again. Basically what had happened was that it recognised the version I had as a different game, it was the Family Fun Pack, theirs was Monopoly Plus.

I got onto Sony the next working day, explained the problem and got fobbed off that it's a different game and that there was nothing they could do for me. It really isn't a different game though. So Deadman (one of the dynamic duo that took up my recommendation) got onto Ubisoft and they gave him pretty much the same story.

So to sum up, technically we own the same game but because I spent a bit more to get the extra stuff that was packaged, I can't play with anyone who just bought the basic pack and vice versa. Now you could argue that with the pack I bought there's extra stuff that wouldn't be compatible with the basic pack the lads got without them splashing out. And that would be a fair point. Except that none of the extra stuff can be shared. For example, I used the My Monopoly to re-create the old Dublin Monopoly board I played as a kid. I can only play that board in local play, not online. Absolutely none of the extra stuff will benefit anyone else except me.

So if you're buying Monopoly and want to play with your friends online, make sure you all agree on getting either the Family Fun Pack or the basic pack.

Sony snook DLNA onto PS4. (sort of)
Posted by: frostface - 12-17-2014, 08:59 PM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

So there's a service called Plex that basically is a paid service that does what a DLNA servers does but up to now through a browser.

Theoretically that means we've had access to a DLNA server all along through the PS4 browser, up until tonight I wasn't aware of this but that's been an option for a long while I believe.

However, I found out about it today because a new dedicated Plex app has appeared on the PS4 for download and I've been messing about with it tonight (I did have to sign up to a Plex sub -4euro'ish a month) and it works really well once set up.

I'll try log on tomorrow and see if it's kept all the settings and how smooth it is getting back into it. I did do some messing about to get it to sync everything on my laptop but nothing that the average joe couldn't figure out.

How about this for a "LIMITED EDITION"
Posted by: thepill - 11-14-2014, 01:41 AM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

The release of each new "Limited Edition" console is always met with excitement, but mostly just by fans of that particular game that the console is modeled after. This got me thinking, what would grab the attention of not just fans of a certain GAME franchise, but also fans of a POP CULTURE franchise, and not just gamers, but non-gamers alike?

2015 will see the re-launch of a HIGHLY POPULAR gaming franchise that has been on hiatus for quite some time, and its release is also coinciding with the release of a MAJOR MOTION PICTURE that also has a HUGE cult following, spanning several generations.

Taking into consideration, the popularity of the recent COD: Modern Warfare Xbox One, I cant help but smile as imagine what it would feel like to open my very own STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT Limited Edition PS4, complete with Emperial Badging and either Darth Vader or StormTrooper themed DualShock4. Oh well, a guy can dream right?

  PSX Community YouTube Video Uploads.
Posted by: frostface - 10-30-2014, 12:46 PM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

Since we're only now getting the ability to upload directly to YouTube direct from PS4 ( can you upload from XBONE already? We all know PC's have been doing it for years! ) and since this site is only compatible with YouTube videos, there's never been a better time to share your gameplay videos with this community than right now.

I'll get the ball rolling...

Lords of the Fallen Commander Boss fight. First real challenge in the game and this one took me a while to beat. In fact I if you look at my health at the end, one more hit and I was gone.

My next video is also from Lords of the Fallen and this one is a long one and to be honest it's boring to watch. I shared it however as it was the next boss fight after The Commander one I posted above and I some how managed to get him stuck. Normally as his health goes down he'll call in some back up and his attack's change. But in this video this didn't happen. He just stayed stuck and I just lost twenty minutes of my life hitting him from afar with my gauntlet power, which had to recharge after every shot so to say it was tedious would be an understatement.

  Destiny clan
Posted by: Amish Love Machine - 09-17-2014, 11:16 AM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

For those who're playing Destiny, aren't in a clan, and are considering joining one, let me recommend the one I'm in. It's for another gaming community I'm a part of (Lousy at Gaming) and we're looking to get more people in who'd like to run strikes and raids. Last time I checked there were 3 or 4 of us who play Destiny on the PS4 so we could use more peeps! We also have some who are on the X1, PS3, and Xbox 360.

If you're interested, pop on over to our clan site on Bungie.net. It's a good, fun group of people.

MS reported to be in talks to buy Mojang
Posted by: Amish Love Machine - 09-10-2014, 08:12 AM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

This story from Total Xbox (which references the WSJ and Bloomberg) states that MS is in talks to buy Mojang, the studio that created Minecraft. If this happens, it doesn't look like MS would turn off PS3/4 access to the servers or no longer update it, based on what I read. I think it's a decent move of MS IFF they don't shut out PSx owners from the game. There's already a good base of PSx owners who have the game and it'd be folly for MS to suddenly cut them off.

Alone In The Dark Reboot, anyone else excited?
Posted by: TheWorldEnds - 08-21-2014, 01:03 PM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

Is anybody else excited about the news that Atari plans to reboot this series? It has had greatness and missteps but I really hope that they are serious this time and getting something at least approaching a AAA production.

I love seeing horror return these days and I've always liked Atari even through hard times (loved my Jaguar). Looking forward to the PAX reveal of Alone in the Dark: Illumination.

Also, still trying to find time to get to play New Nightmare on Dreamcast now that I've amped up the graphics. Those puzzles are puzzling and I love Lovecraft.

  My gaming community fatigue......
Posted by: Akuma07 - 08-04-2014, 11:16 AM - Forum: Gaming Discussion - No Replies

Hey guys,

Over the past couple weeks I have noticed myself becoming less and less vocal on this site and the many others I frequent.

It wasn't until the other day when I realized why...........I am just so darn sick and tired of the people.

Is it just me or has the gaming community as a whole just become such a negative hate machine? It seems like there is a constant stream of negativity from most of the people around these days.

I think it reached a climax for me when I started going on to the Destiny Forum. There is SO much hatred and negativity in that forum. If it isn't the Xbox fan girls crying about the Playstation exclusive stuff, it's the intellectually challenged people who want the game nerfed because they are not good at it, or the people who think they are gaming gods and everyone else is worthless trash.

Then there is websites like n4g.com which is just a billboard of opinions by people who wear a badge that says "Game Journalist", and most of them are total morons who write stupid articles just for click bait.

Even on PSXExtreme I can't be bothered half the time because I know someone is going to argue with me. I type a comment then I just sigh and say "don't waste your time".

Being an active member of the gaming community has become draining. Is it just me? Do I just need a break? Or is the gaming community as a whole becoming more immature every single year?
